What are the differences between counselling, psychotherapy and cbt?

Counselling usually focuses on a specific issue, for example anxiety. It tends to be short term (1–30 sessions) depending on the individual.

Psychotherapy involves more in–depth work than counselling and may take longer. Psychotherapy can be more general, concerned with the person's feelings and thought processes rather than specific problems. It may also look at childhood problems and explore a range of choices; how we choose to be in this world, personal and spiritual growth, and may ask the question: who am I?

CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) is concerned with looking at specific situations (triggers) and related thoughts, feelings and physical sensations. It enables you to think in more helpful ways and to respond differently. You will then have a toolbox you can use outside the therapy room.
